Networks can help people from different backgrounds find others who have similar experiences, and provide specific advice and resources to support people in their careers.
Similarly, there are lots of organisations which offer the opportunity for people to give back, for example through mentoring.

Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers
AFBE-UK promotes higher achievements in education and engineering particularly among people from black and minority ethnicity (BME) backgrounds. Its mission is to increase the number of BME Engineers who succeed professionally and support young people to explore a career in engineering.
AXIS Network
AXIS Network’s vision is a prosperous and sustainable UK Energy Industry which has achieved gender equity by 2030. It is passionate about supporting initiatives to drive change. It facilitates mentoring and role-modelling initiatives as well as highlighting good practice in offshore inclusion.
Become a mentor via Social Mobility Foundation
As an SMF Mentor, you can personally help a young person on our Aspiring Professionals Programme (APP) on a one-to-one basis via email. Becoming an SMF mentor is a great way to see someone develop and help them to reach their potential by giving them useful insights into how to get a job like yours.
Diverse Heat Network
The Diverse Heat Network has been established to ensure that the emerging UK heat network sector leaves no stone unturned when it comes to attracting talented people to drive the industry forward. Through a range of initiatives and activities, it wants to strengthen the industry, be more innovative and have more creative solutions to develop, grow and retain the talent pool. Success depends on being attractive as a destination and a career for people regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, social class and so on.
Energyz Black
Energyz Black is dedicated to creating a transformative space where Black professionals in the energy sector thrive and contribute to the industry’s growth and innovation. It envisions a vibrant energy industry where diversity thrives, and Black professionals excel as leaders, innovators, and change-makers.
IGNITE Network+
The IGNITE Network+ [Innovation and Growth Needs Inclusion and engagement of all Talent in Energy] is a four-year funded EPSRC project which was established in September 2022. It aims to create a diverse and inclusive energy research sector in which all individuals can thrive. Our goal through the network is to identify barriers at all career stages and innovate to remove them.
The network is led by the University of Strathclyde with partners Imperial College London, the University of Manchester, the University of Nottingham, the University of Bristol, Queen’s University Belfast and Brunel University London.
Institute of Equality and Diversity Professionals
The Institute of Equality and Diversity Professionals is the professional body of equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights practitioners. It is an independent body, run by practitioners for practitioners. It offers accreditation, events and up to date news.
Lean In
Lean In is a peer-to-peer, independent, global gender diversity and inclusion social impact organisation. The company is a member-centric, diverse, global circle of women and allies supporting and empowering women to achieve their ambitions. Its mission is to democratise access to information and opportunities for women in male-dominated sectors to build a sustainable future.
PRIDE in Energy
The industry’s Pride in Energy network is a diversity forum and network for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ+) members of the energy industry and their allies. The Pride in Energy network was created in response to a need for an organisation to address LGBTQ+ issues in the energy industry. Despite representing 750,000 jobs, five percent of GDP and over two percent of all jobs in the UK the energy industry had fallen behind other equivalent industries in key indices such as the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index.
POWERful Women
POWERful Women is a professional initiative working for a gender-balanced, diverse and inclusive energy sector. Its goal is for women to be in at least 40% of middle management and leadership roles in the UK energy sector by 2030. POWERful Women challenges and reports; supports women to develop and advance their careers; and provides practical support to companies committed to improving their diversity and inclusion.
Regen’s Women in Renewable Energy
Regen’s Women in Renewable Energy (ReWiRE) enables people and organisations to connect, learn and take action on gender diversity and inclusion. The vision of the ReWiRE network is to make gender diversity a priority at all levels of the clean energy sector, making companies more resilient and able to innovate.
The Climate Circle
The Climate Circle is dedicated to building meaningful relationships among women in climate action. Intimate and thoughtfully curated events foster real conversations and genuine connections, empowering women passionate about climate change to feel supported, inspired, and equipped to make positive impacts.
Women in Engineering Society
The Women’s Engineering Society is a charitable company, founded in 1919 to support women in engineering. Over 100 years later, it still operates as a Membership Society, promoting the education of women in engineering and advancing the education of the public concerning the study and practice of engineering among women.

Women in Nuclear UK’s mission is to address the industry’s gender balance, improve the representation of women in leadership, engage with the industry, government and public on nuclear issues and support the industry with tools and information.
