Energy industry urged to sign up to Health Index and track EDI progress

Companies across the energy industry can now sign up for the 2026 Health Index, a cross-sector initiative designed to help improve equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) practices.

The Health Index was launched in 2024 by TIDE (Tackling Inclusion and Diversity in Energy) to provide firms with the means to understand and anonymously benchmark their EDI initiatives against others in the industry, as well as understand sector-wide challenges and progress.

Supported by Cognician, an employee activation platform designed to drive behaviour change, the Index comprises a set of simple, high-level statements for companies to self-assess against. It measures the policies, processes and actions companies have in place and does not require employee data input.

Together with Energy & Utility Skills’ Inclusion Measurement Framework, which tracks the outcomes of EDI practices across a range of characteristics, the Health Index is used to build a clear picture of the energy industry’s EDI maturity and identify gaps requiring further attention or support.

Juliette Sanders, Chief Communications Officer at Energy UK, said on behalf of TIDE:

The energy industry is vital to the country’s security and future economy, and it’s never been more important to ensure it has all the talent needed to achieve its ambitions.

Now in its third year, the Health Index is a valuable tool that we can use as an industry to track and improve how attractive a place we are to come and work. Its effectiveness only improves with more participants, so we are asking as many firms as possible to take part this year.

Companies need to register before the window for data collection opens on 8 April to ensure that the information gathered covers measures active in the same period. Firms will then be asked to self-assess their activities across four key themes: strategy, people, internal and external. These answers are provided anonymously to ensure companies can assess their performance with confidence.

Last year’s Health Index findings showed encouraging signs of progress across the ‘strategy’, people’ and ‘internal’ categories. Particular improvements were seen in the level of strategic EDI qualitative and quantitative goals in place across participating firms, while there was also growing evidence of increased support for inclusive workplace cultures.

It also indicated, however, a lack of leadership engagement, with many organisations stating they do not have a person nominated for the responsibility of EDI strategy and programmes.

By building engagement in the Health Index across a growing number of participating firms, TIDE hopes to track an even wider cohort of firms successfully delivering EDI or help others seeking additional resources to improve their own practices.

The findings of the 2026 Health Index will be presented at the EDI in Energy Conference, set to take place virtually and in London this summer.

About TIDE

TIDE (Tackling Inclusion and Diversity in Energy) is a collaboration between energy trade associations. It started as a volunteer-led group in 2022 and, alongside the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Energy calendar, which marks EDI training, events and days of significance, TIDE hosts the EDI in Energy Hub. This includes resources for EDI / HR and talent development professionals across the sector, as well as individuals looking to find support and people who may be facing similar challenges to them.

TIDE also runs the Health Index, an EDI maturity tool that measures the policies and processes companies have in place and their impact. It is designed to both allow companies to anonymously benchmark themselves, as well as supporting wider industry data collection and the ability to measure progress year on year.

TIDE works closely with EDI in Energy groups, such as POWERful Women, Energyz Black and Pride in Energy, and is supported by Energy UK, ENA, Energy Institute, RenewableUK and Offshore Energies UK. It is seeking to widen its collaboration with other energy trade bodies during 2026.
